Miguel Cárdenas Montes visits IFIC from May 19th to 20th, 2025

dc., 14/05/2025 - 04:00

Miguel Cárdenas Montes holds a degree in Physical Sciences from the University of Seville and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Extremadura. He is currently a researcher at CIEMAT. Over the past 20 years, he has been actively involved in data science, both in analysis and infrastructure management.

He is a member of the international DEAP-3600 collaboration, dedicated to the search for Dark Matter, and the Virgo collaboration, focused on the detection of gravitational waves. In both collaborations, he applies neural networks for event discrimination, as well as Explainable Artificial Intelligence to help physicists understand the underlying mechanisms of neural networks' discriminative power. Additionally, he engages in extensive work on air quality analysis. Beyond numerous efforts to improve forecasting, he has applied neural networks to the identification of malfunctions in monitoring stations and Gaussian processes to evaluate the impact of Low Emission Zones such as Madrid Central.

He also continues to publish and contribute to data analysis in astrophysics and health sciences, collaborating with the Fundación Hospital 12 de Octubre on the application of Artificial Intelligence to oncology data. His passion for science communication has led him to develop games that illustrate Artificial Intelligence problems.

His office at IFIC is B.1.4 (ground floor, IFIC).
