Thirty Physics students from across Spain take part in the IFIC summer programme
The Institute of Corpuscular Physics (IFIC), a joint centre of the CSIC and the University of Valencia, has held a new edition of its summer research programme, an initiative aimed at undergraduate Physics students interested in discovering what research in nuclear and particle physics is really like.
From 14 to 25 July, the IFIC Summer Student Programme offered thirty students from universities across Spain the opportunity to immerse themselves in the daily work of the institute’s research groups. Over two weeks, the participants gained first-hand experience of how cutting-edge experimental physics projects are carried out, from data analysis to the development of detectors and scientific software.
The programme includes training activities tailored to each student's level, regardless of their year of study. Participants took part in practical workshops, one-on-one sessions with their tutors, and even contributed to real research tasks within the groups. They also attended talks given by IFIC researchers, covering current topics in both fundamental and applied physics, as well as potential academic and professional pathways in research.
During their stay, the students toured the institute's laboratories, where advanced technologies are developed for both basic research and practical applications in medical physics or security. They also had the chance to talk with young researchers and PhD students, gaining insight into what it’s like to begin a scientific career.
IFIC conducts research in particle physics, astroparticles, cosmology, nuclear physics and its many applications. Its participation in major international collaborations makes it a privileged environment for bringing cutting-edge science closer to university students. With this initiative, IFIC not only brings research closer to the new generations, but also inspires scientific vocations with the conviction that physics can help change the world and improve people’s lives.
