IFIC celebrates Dark Matter Day in planetariums in València, Castelló and Tenerife

Wed, 16/10/2019 - 11:37

The Institute of Corpuscular Physics (IFIC, Universitat de València-CSIC) is once again celebrating Dark Matter Day, an international event that aims to make known the research being carried out on one of the great challenges of modern physics: discovering what dark matter is. The activities begin this Friday, October 18th in the Aula Cajal of the Faculty of Medicine.

The IFIC organizes three events within this framework.  Friday 18th October, a talk about dark matter by videoconference halfway between València and Tenerife. IFIC researchers Alberto Aparici and Avelino Vicente will be in València, and Héctor Socas and Jose Alberto Rubiño from the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) will be in the Museum of Science and Cosmos (MCC) of Tenerife. The four of them will talk about dark matter from the points of view of particle physics and astrophysics, and then open a round of questions on both sides via the net. The meeting takes place at 8:00 p.m. (peninsular time) in the Aula Cajal of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.  Free entrance until full capacity is reached. More info here.

On Tuesday 29th October at 7 p.m., at the Hemisfèric of the City of Arts and Sciences in València, 'Phantom of the Universe' will be screened, a documentary for planetariums that aims to bring the fascinating enigma of the unknown still unidentified to science and dark matter closer to the public, in whose production the IFIC participated. The screening will be preceded by an introductory talk by Olga Mena, IFIC researcher. Admission will be free upon registration on the website of the City of Arts and Sciences.

On Thursday 31st October at 6:00 p.m., at the Planetari de Castelló, an activity similar to the one held in València will take place, with the screening of the documentary The Phantom of the Universe and then a talk by Sergio Pastor (IFIC). Admission is free until full capacity is reached, but an invitation is required, which must be picked up at the Planetari ticket office.

In addition, the Museum of Science and Cosmos of Tenerife projects daily from 11th to 20th October 'Phantom of the Universe'.
