José W. Furtado Valle receives the Margarita Salas Medal from the CSIC for the best career in research staff supervision

Tue, 07/10/2025 - 10:01

The ad honorem research professor José W. Furtado Valle, founding member of the AHEP (Astroparticles and High Energy Physics) group at the Instituto de Física Corpuscular (IFIC), a joint center of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of Valencia (UV), has been awarded in the 3rd edition of the Margarita Salas Medal.

The CSIC established the Margarita Salas Medal in 2022 to highlight the importance of mentorship in the professional development of researchers. The award granted to Professor Valle recognizes his extensive career in supervising and mentoring young researchers, particularly in the supervision of doctoral theses.

Throughout his career, Professor Valle has supervised or co-supervised 22 doctoral theses defended at the University of Valencia since 1990. Nearly half of them correspond to early-career researchers of non-Spanish nationality, and four of the supervised students received the Extraordinary Doctorate Award. Many of these researchers now hold permanent positions in scientific institutions both in Spain and in other Latin American countries. Others have pursued professional careers beyond academia, in sectors such as aerospace, energy, big data, software development, medical physics, and science communication.

The jury also valued his local supervision of predoctoral and postdoctoral staff from other international groups during their stays at the IFIC. In particular, José served as coordinator of a European project for the training of young predoctoral researchers (European Commission Research Training Site on Particle Physics Beyond the Standard Model, 2000–2004).
