Monica completed her phD in Neurosciences on animal and human central nervous systems at the Universities of Vienna, Austria, and Paris VI ‘Pierre et Marie Curie’, France. She was postdoctoral fellow at Sandoz Ltd. in Basel, Switzerland, and at the College de France in Paris, where she worked on mapping of neurotransmitters and neuronal network models, before entering the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) in France. After some years of research work, she was proposed to take responsibilities in European cooperation and industrial relations. 2001 she was appointed coordinator of the internal European affairs network and CNRS representative and Director of its Brussels office, Belgium. In Brussels her career took a new turn which led her to European R&I policy. She worked at the EC's DG RTD on setting up the ERC (European Research Council), she was director of COST (European Cooperation for Science and Technology) and later held various advisory and management positions, at CNRS, at Science|Business, and at the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, in Paris. Today she is Executive director of ISE (Initiative for Science in Europe).
